The origins of Natural Stone: where does marble come from?

In the first of a series of blogs about the origins of natural stone, we are looking at where marble comes from. We are proud to offer a selection of luxury marble tiles all sourced from the highest quality quarries which we regularly visit to source.

So what is marble? Marble is a metamophic rock - a natural stone created when limestone is subjected to heat and pressure AKA metamorphism. Marble forms at convergent plate boundaries where metamophism takes place.

Due to the above process, marble can occur hundreds of feet thick and spanning large geographical areas. Marble mines and quarries are situated in these areas to extract the natural forming material.

The type and colour of the marble can depend on many factors including the geographical location of the stone. Marble quarries occur across Turkey, Greece and the US, but the most famous and treasured source is southern Italy.

We source the very finest Italian marbles and follow the process from quarry to construction. One of the most renowned areas in Italy for marble is Carrara which you can see in the photos below. Carrara marble is famous for being treasured by Roman and Greek artists and sculptors including the one and only Michelangelo.
